Sunset State School Newsletter
26 August 2009
Dear Parents
After having spent all of last week out of town attending educational conferences, I was thrilled to return to school on Monday to present on Parade an amazing amount of student awards! A huge amount of students received awards for sightword work, reading goals, lexile reading and student of the week. Mrs Potter worked hard taking lots of photos of our happy recipients! Congratulations to all students who received a special award.
Last week I was fortunate enough to attend a National Conference run by the Australian Council of Educational Research. The conference focussed on Assessment and educational outcomes and featured a wide range of national and international speakers. It was a great opportunity to be exposed to some new ideas and the latest educational trends while also being reassured that the work that is happening in our classrooms each and every day is right on the money! Sunset’s focus on personalised learning that supports each and every child with the opportunity to progress is certainly the direction that education is heading in.
The Annual Opti-minds challenge is being held at Spinifex Junior campus this Saturday morning.
The students will perform their spontaneous challenge at 8:45 a.m. and present their long term challenge at 10:10 a.m. This year’s team has entered into the Language Literature category and will be presenting their solution to the problem “Picture This”. The challenge is to bring ‘hard copy’ picture books back to life and renew enthusiasm. The children have created an exciting picture storybook with a mind blowing book launch to present to the judges. I am looking forward to heading along to watch the students performance and hope to see many Sunset faces in the audience with me!
Congratulations to Tyesha who travelled to Longreach last week to participate in the North West Athletics Team. Tyesha came third in discus – we are very proud of her efforts and the way that she represented our school!
LEXILE READING GROUPS
The introduction of Lexile BONUS POINTS is proving to be a great motivator. The current use of Lexile Bonus Points has definitely encouraged students to read more and to sit more online comprehension quizzes. Congratulations to the Blue and Red Level Certificate winners and also to those students who are aspiring to improve their Lexile scores.
ENROLMENTS OPEN FOR PREP IN 2010
Enrolments are now open for children entering Prep in 2010. If your child turns five by 30 June next year then they can enrol in Prep.
Prep is the first year of school. It develops children’s independence and gives them the very best start to school by better preparing them for the transition into Year 1.
Children attending Prep at Sunset will do lots of fun things to help them learn. They will play, draw, paint, build with blocks and storytell. Prep is five days a week and not compulsory.
Call into the office today and collect your Prep Enrolment form. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate for age confirmation.
