Sunset State School Newsletter
16 September 2009
Dear Parents
W and 5/6A returned from their camp at West Leichhardt on Friday afternoon with lots of exciting stories and adventures to tell. Congratulations to Mrs Williams and Miss Apelgren who did an amazing job of organising and co-ordinating their first school camp! A big thank-you to Mr Campbell, Mrs Webber and Mrs Kum-Sing who also attended and brought invaluable skills to the camp. Special mention must be made to the following parents who assisted with transporting students to the camp:
Mr & Mrs Burnett and Mr Walsh
ncluded in this newsletter are some great photos as well as some recollections from some of the students!
On Wednesday the 9th of September in the morning 5W and 5/6A went on camp to West Leichhardt Station. When we got there we all had to set up the tents. At camp all the kids played cooperative games and rode a horse. At night we all went down to the camp fire and cooked marshmallows. We all liked this. Then we returned to school on Friday the 11th of September in the afternoon. By Kimberley Egan 5/6A
On Wednesday the 9th of September 5W and 5/6A went on camp to West Leichhardt Station. At our camp we had to build tents so we could sleep in them. When we finished we played some games like Capture the Flag, Treasure Hunt, Dodgeball, Big Mouth, 123 Home base and Egg and Spoon races and they were fun. The teachers’ game was Ultimate Frisbee. On Friday the 11th September we left to go back to school They say it was the most fun camp ever! By Aaron Jeffery 5/6A
n May of this year the Year 3, 5 and 7 students participated in the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (commonly referred to as NAPLAN). Our whole school results were released on Monday of this week and I am thrilled to report the following facts:
- There has been an increase in the % of Sunset students performing above the national minimum standard in every area of the test, across every year level.
- We have seen the greatest growth in spelling and grammar/punctuation with each year level seeing a significant growth in the % of students who are performing at or above the national minimum standard.
- We have a larger number of students performing in the higher bands.
This improvement is a direct reflection of the focussed approach that we have taken to responding to the whole school trends identified in our results in 2008.
Individual student reports will be posted to our school – once we have received the reports we will send them home with your child. Accompanying the report will be a generic letter that provides an overview of the different features of the report. I strongly encourage parents to take the time to talk to their child’s teacher and engage in a discussion to understand how their child has performed in the test. The report will provide one snapshot of your child’s literacy and numeracy skills but their classroom teacher will be able to provide a much more detailed account of where your child is currently at with their learning.
t the end of this week we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Tanya Gallagher as she leaves Sunset and teaching to prepare for the birth of her baby in early October. Mrs Gallagher’s work and commitment with the children in the SEU will be greatly missed as she has been a very valuable staff member both in the SEU and the whole school. We wish Tanya all the best and look forward to reporting the good news when bub arrives!
e are pleased to announce that Tanya’s replacement for next term will be Mrs Terri D’Unienville. Terri completed a contract in the unit at the beginning of this term and will be a familiar face to our students, parents and staff. Terri has already developed a positive and productive relationship with staff and students and is familiar with many aspects of their programs which will ensure a smooth transition for the students.
ext term we welcome back Mrs Laura Luban-Bates who is returning from leave. Mrs Luban-Bates will continue to be based at Sunset and will be part of our local relief teaching pool. We look forward to welcoming her back and seeing her warm and friendly face in many of the classrooms.

ENROLMENTS OPEN FOR PREP IN 2010
Enrolments are now open for children entering Prep in 2010. If your child turns five by 30 June next year then they can enrol in Prep.
Prep is the first year of school. It develops children’s independence and gives them the very best start to school by better preparing them for the transition into Year 1.
Children attending Prep at Sunset will do lots of fun things to help them learn. They will play, draw, paint, build with blocks and story tell. Prep is five days a week and not compulsory.
Call into the office today and collect your Prep Enrolment form. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate for age confirmation.
