Dear Parents

T
hank-you to those parents who returned their school photo money to the office – it has made the organisation and planning of the two days much easier. Rain has been forecast for Thursday and Friday so we have made the decision to take the photos in the Library Courtyard this year – luckily we have a beautiful garden in the courtyard with lots of greenery which will make for a beautiful backdrop.

N
ext Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday our Year 3,5,7 students will participate in the National Literacy and Numeracy tests. Our teachers have done a great deal of preparation for the tests and subsequently the testing experience should be a familiar and less daunting experience for our students. While the students are often reluctant participants in the tests, they provide us with useful information about how all state and non-state school students are performing in Literacy and Numeracy at their year level in comparison to their peers across Australia.

The Literacy assessment will focus on areas of reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar while the Numeracy testing will cover measurement, chance and data, space, working mathematically, algebra function and pattern.

Results from the tests will be used for reports to parents, school reporting to their communities, and reporting by States and Territories to form a national overview.

The tests will also help teachers identify key areas for learning during the rest of the school year.

While it’s important that students perform at their best, it’s also important that students are not unduly stressed. Here are some general tips for beating test nerves:

·      Get at least eight hours sleep
·      Take time out from test preparation to do something relaxing and enjoyable
·      Exercise and eat healthy meals regularly
·      Develop a time management plan for studying
·      Ask an older sibling or friend who has been through tests to give some tips on how to study
·      If feeling anxious, take a few moments to breathe deeply.

For more information on the national testing, visit www.qsa.qld.edu.au

C
ongratulations to students who were selected in the North West Rugby League football team during the Regional Carnival on the weekend. They will be travelling to Cairns to represent our region and compete in the state carnival. We wish them the best of luck!

Yours in education

BRING HOME A BROTHER OR A SISTER

In July 2009, students, aged 15 – 18 years, from over 15 countries will be arriving in Australia to study at local schools for 5 or 10 months. Opportunities exist to act as a host family in a volunteer/unpaid capacity. Hosting can be on a temporary, short or long term basis.

Host families help provide our students with the chance to study and experience life in Australia. This is a great way to learn about another country and culture, establish a lifelong link to a family in another country and contribute to international goodwill. If your family can offer a friendly, supportive and caring home environment, contact us today.

To learn more about this opportunity call Student Exchange Australia on 1300 135 331
or visit our website: www.studentexchange.org.au
