Sunset State School Newsletter

3 June 2009

Dear Parents

L
ast night our 2008 P&C President Mrs Melinda Haack chaired our Annual General Meeting. Mrs Haack wrote a moving and passionate President’s report that reflected the hugely successful year that our P&C had under her guidance. We were extremely fortunate last year that Mrs Haack and Mr Hujanen both stepped into the P&C – they provided essential direction, skills and even persistence as they got our P&C on track and focussed for the year. While our 2008 P&C was small in numbers it was certainly big in heart and commitment – with our numbers dwindling to three parents at some of our meetings we still managed to co-ordinate a highly successful school fete. My sincere thanks and appreciation goes to the 2008 P&C:

President – Mrs Melinda Haack
Treasurer – Mr Tony Hujanen
Secretary – Mrs Melinda Haack
Tuckshop Convenor – Ms Lisa Kyle

Last nights’ meeting was well attended and we welcomed some new faces which is always very exciting! Congratulations to our 2009 committee:

President – Mrs Jenny Whittington
Vice President – Mrs Jo Ingram
Treasurer – Mr Tony Hujanen
Secretary – Mrs Jazmin Polmeer
QCPCA rep – Mrs Jenny Whittington/Mrs Jazmin Polmeer

I am absolutely thrilled to see that we have all executive positions filled and look forward to working with our new executive in 2009. Our next P&C meeting will be held on Monday the 22nd of June commencing at 5:00 p.m. in the school library.

Our P&C will be selling food at the school sports carnival on Tuesday the 16th of June. I am sure Lisa and Kathy would love some assistance with preparing and selling food on the day – please pop in and see the ladies for more information. Mr Kerr will be sending a copy of the sports carnival program home with the newsletter next week – stay tuned!

A
s you can see it is an exciting time at Sunset as our school continues to have a wide range of facilities upgraded and new infrastructure built. I am thrilled with the work that has occurred with the construction of new shade sails on our Prep, Year 3 / 4 and Year 5,6,7 play areas. The amount of shade that the students receive has increased substantially and the UV and shade factor are ranked at between 81% and 99%. Over the next few weeks the shade sails will be completed across the basketball court and Armstrong Square providing even more SunSmart play areas for our students.

Sunset has also been identified to receive a range of refurbishments for some classrooms including an internal repaint for SEU, 3W, Music Room and new carpet in the Music Room, 3W and IEW room. Each classroom will also be fitted with new classroom furniture and each block will have at least one interactive whiteboard so that we can increase student access to technology.

BOOK CLUB
Orders for the current Book Club are due to the library this Friday 5 June.

FANTASTIC BOOK FAIR
Last week’s Book Fair was very well supported by the Sunset State School community. We sold over $2200 worth of books and Scholastic merchandise. As commission the school’s library received about $700 worth of new books. Thank you to all the families who support the school and their children’s love of reading. The next Book Fair will be in November.

QUEENSLAND DAY COMPETITION
To help celebrate the great state of Queensland and its 150th birthday, a competition is being held in the library at lunch times. Students guess how many pineapple and banana lollies are in the jar. Entry is FREE! The winner will be announced next week, Queensland Week, and will receive the lollies as their prize.
NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORYTELLING
Sunset State School participated in the National Simultaneous Storytelling at 11am on Wednesday 27 May. This year “Pete the Sheep’ by Jackie French, illustrated by Bruce Whatley was chosen as the book to be read. In public libraries and schools all over Australia, this book was read at 11.00am on Wednesday 27th May, hence the name “national simultaneous storytelling”. To add to the simultaneous nature of the reading Sunset had two copies of “Pete the Sheep”, one copy was read in the library by the teacher-librarian, Mrs Potter and the second copy was read in the games room by teacher, Mr Campbell. The timing coincided with the school’s lunch break and about forty children came to the storytelling sessions.
It was a great opportunity to promote the love of books and reading to children all over Australia.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR STUDENTS STARTING PREP YEAR
Is your child starting Prep in 2010?

If your child was born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005, you will need proof of age (such as their birth certificate) to enrol them in school next year.

Don’t leave it to the last minute; apply for a birth certificate now!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Never underestimate what children can manage as readers and listeners. Children who haven’t been read to don’t expect print to make sense. If children don’t expect sense they’ll find learning to read difficult. Some of the most badly written books in the world are commonly called ‘school readers’.
TUCKSHOP NEWS
Parents are reminded that a new tuckshop price list was issued at the end of last term. All items on the menu have increased in price. These prices now apply so please take the time to call into the tuckshop or office and collect a new list. The tuckshop list can also be accessed on the web at www.sunsetss.eq.edu.au.

WELL DONE YEAR 6B
Miss Bauer in Year 6B has been studying “Arguments” with her students and below is an example of the work produced. Students and staff on parade on Tuesday were witness to the strong forceful arguments displayed by Year 6B. The power of their conviction was evidenced by the hushed atmosphere as everyone became absorbed in the discussion.
We hope you enjoy the examples below and tonight we say “GO THE QUEENSLANDERS!”…

N.S.W is The Best Team

N.S.W is the best team in the Rugby League State of Origin.

Firstly, I believe they are better than Queenslandbecause, they have a lot of energy and they never give up. They also
Drink PowerAde to make them strong men and to keep fit.

Secondly, N.S.W pass the ball and share it around with the team. This makes it great team work! In the last series they were close to winning, only lost by 1 point.

Lastly, I believe they have 4 outstanding point scorers in their team which are Luke O’Donnell, Brent Kite, Kurt Gidley, and Peter Wallace. N.S.Wtalks to each other throughout the game

I also believe the Crowd cheers more for N.S.Wthan Queensland. The cheerleaders are also very pretty looking girls. When you walk past the shops you see more N.S.Wsupporters than Queensland when the games are on.

So I strongly believe that N.S.W are going to WIN this State of Origin series.
My Argument by Troyden

Ahh!!! It’s the mighty
Cane Toads

Run for your life it’s the brilliant Cane Toads. They’re coming and ready to win the fight.

Firstly, everybody knows that the smoking Toads have won 17 series and those stinking Roaches have only won 13. So that means that the fighting Cane Toads are the best in the world!

Secondly, if you think that the Blues are the best then you’re a fool who’s going to be embarrassed when the Maroons get out there and win the fight. Their Coach Mal Meniga has been training them long and hard. So they are 100% going to win because they have an extremely strong forwards and an impossible backline.

Lastly, you wait and see who the roughest and toughest is? It’s the magnificent Cane Toads of course!!!!!

The war is on. Look at them Cane Toads go!! NSW supporters can’t even watch they are so embarrassed!!

ANNUAL SPORTS CARNIVAL
The time has once again come for Sunset to hold its annual sports carnival. This year we are holding a one day carnival to be held on Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 for both upper and lower primary students. The prep – 3 classes will run a series of events on the school oval between 9:00am to 12:30 and then they will join the grades 4 – 7 students on Sunset Oval for the remainder of the day. Students who are turning 9 and older will be spending the day at Sunset Oval competing in a series of events starting at 9:00 and completing at 2:30. Students are encouraged to wear their house colours and must bring a hat, water bottle, sunscreen, closed in shoes (students can not compete without proper footwear) and their lunch. There will be food available at the carnival.

This year the high jump event will be taking place at school instead of at the carnival. Each age group from 9 through to 13 year olds will participate in high jump in lunch times the week before the sports carnival. A program of events will be sent out in the next newsletter.
