Sunset State School Newsletter

10 June 2009
.

Dear Parents

T
he cooler weather is starting to settle in which can only mean one thing – our school sports carnival is just around the corner! Attached to this week’s newsletter is a program for our sports carnival which is being held on next Tuesday the 16th of June. All students from Prep through to Year Seven will be actively involved in the carnival with the focus being on participation and having a go! Please remember we have three houses:

Miles – Red
Kruttschnitt – Yellow
Foots – Blue.

Students will be involved in war cry practise this Friday afternoon in preparation for the big day! Our students always demonstrate great team spirit and enthusiasm with many students proudly wearing their house colours on the day. Please remind your child that coloured hair spray is banned from school – while it is acceptable for students to use it at home and arrive at school with it on, any child who is found to have cans at school will have them confiscated. Children need to be wearing sneakers for all track and field events – children wearing no shoes and/or thongs will not be able to participate. Please ensure your child also has a hat and water bottle for the day – while the weather is getting cooler the sun’s rays are still just as damaging. We have recently purchased bigger tents which Mr Barry has modified to ensure shade is maximised right throughout the day. Our wonderful tuckshop ladies will be selling food and drinks on the day. Sunset parents and families always turn out in full force to join in the festivities – we look forward to seeing you all there!

I
t is with great pride that I report to you all that we have had a significant decrease in the number of students spending time in the RTC for both classroom and playground incidents. Entries in the Bully Log have also decreased substantially which I believe is a reflection of all of the wonderful learning experiences and extra-curricular activities that our staff provides for Sunset students. The RTC is now closed during class time with disruptive students sent to my office to complete their work with me. The RTC continues to remain open during lunchtimes and school – home communication will remain as strong as ever as we continue to send letters home and class teachers keep parents informed of school life.

L
ast Friday our school captains and vice-captains were invited to attend the official opening of Mount Isa’s Family Water Park – included in this week’s newsletter are some great photos of the students enjoying the new facility!

A
s you would be aware Moscow Circus is heading to Mount Isa – we were fortunate enough to secure some free passes for Sunset students. Every child who has missed ten or less days this term went into a raffle which was drawn on Tuesday’s parade. Congratulations to the children who won a free pass,

Today all students received a Stop, Think, Do wrist band as part of our whole school values program. “Stop, Think, Do” is a world recognised strategy that helps students make responsible choices when they find themselves having to make a decision. Staff will be actively encouraging students to use this strategy both in the classroom and the playground. Students are encouraged to wear their wrist band as a daily reminder of this approach.

Queensland Day Competition
A student from Prep A is the winner of the “Guess the Number of Lollies in the Jar” competition. He guessed 120 which was the closest to the 125 that were in the jar.
This week the competition is on again in the library, but for the adults in the school, who thought they were hard done by last week when the competition was for the students only!

BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR PREP YEAR
Is your child starting Prep in 2010? If your child was born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005, you will need proof of age (such as their birth certificate) to enrol them in school next year. Don’t leave it to the last minute; apply for a birth certificate now!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
Give children as much experience of the world as possible.
-          Reading comprises three ‘secrets’ – understanding print, understanding language and understanding how the world works.
-          Good readers rarely have to sound out words. Good readers use the three secrets of reading simultaneously, rapidly and efficiently.
-          Poor readers use only one of the secrets; phonics. It’s like reading down a straw!

NOT TOO LATE TO CELEBRATE!
There’s still time for students to join in the celebrations of the 30th year of the MS Read-A-Thon by registering to take part in the June reading event. Here’s how to get involved:
Click online for free registration and receive a free MS Read-A-Thon wristband. Flick through books during the month of June (you can count books from other reading programs too). Collect sponsorship donations from family and friends and collect some terrific rewards. Don’t worry if you can’t start on 1st June. You can still participate – just set your reading goals that you want to achieve for the MS Read-A-Thon, then start reading! Record your reading as usual and then send us back the Completion Form we send you in June as soon as you can! Vixit www.msreadathon.org.au or call 1300 677 323 for more details.

TUCKSHOP NEWS
Parents are reminded that a new tuckshop price list was issued at the end of last term. All items on the menu have increased in price. These prices now apply so please take the time to call into the tuckshop or office and collect a new list. The tuckshop list can also be accessed on the web at www.sunsetss.eq.edu.au.

JUNIOR SPORTS CARNIVAL
Our junior carnival is also held on Tuesday June 16th, 2009. Students will go to class at the start of the day for roll call and then make their way to the basketball courts for our march past. Students will then make their way to our school oval and compete in a series of events. Students are to bring a hat, water bottle, sunscreen and appropriate closed in footwear as well as a packed lunch. The tuck shop will not be open on the day.

A copy of the carnival is attached to this newsletter as well as the canteen menu for the upper primary carnival down at Sunset Oval. Please note that because the Year Prep to 3 students are staying at school, there is no canteen facilities available and they should have a packed lunch.

Next week, Tuesday June 16th, 2009 is our annual sports carnival. Students have been practicing hard for this day all semester. Students are to arrive at school and go straight to their class for roll call. We then assemble on the basketball courts for our traditional march past and head down to Sunset Oval. Students are to bring a hat, water bottle, sunscreen and appropriate closed in footwear as well as lunch. Canteen facilities will be provided for those who would like to buy their lunch. The tuck shop will not be open. Students may wear their house colours to show team spirit. Students can paint their hair before coming to school, however hair spray is not allowed at school on the day.
