Sunset State School Newsletter
27 May 2009
Dear Parents
his week saw our School Choir perform at the Eisteddfod on Wednesday night under the guidance of our talented music teacher, Mrs Baills. The students performed two pieces - the set song ‘Best Friend’ and their chosen piece of ‘My Island Home’. Sunset received a Highly Commended award from the adjudicators – a well deserved result for their hard work this year. Thank you to Mrs Baills for the time and dedication she puts into our school choir and to the staff who came to support and supervise the students on the night. Mrs Pam Breen has been accompanying them on the piano to assist with their rehearsals and I would like to take this opportunity to thank her for her assistance. Special thanks must go to the children who participated in the choir, for their dedication and commitment in representing out school. Well done, students!
he Eisteddfod also gave a number of students the chance to show their musical talents and I would like to congratulate them on their achievements.
e have celebrated some wonderful success in sport this week with girls being selected for the North West Regional Girls Soccer Team and one of our boys being selected in the Boys Soccer Team.
Girls also gained selection in the District Touch Football Team to compete in Longreach. Congratulations to all our successful students.
ongratulations to Miss Thompson who took on the enormous task of co-ordinating our Under 8s day yesterday. Thanks to all P-3 teachers and teacher aides who organised great activities. It was a wonderful success as evidenced by the huge smiles on our children’s faces when they returned at first break!
on't forget to visit our Library this week as it is Book Fair time! The Sunset school community always responds well to our Book Fair which results in new resources for our Library. Please see Mrs Potter for further information.
ur P&C is holding its Annual General Meeting on Tuesday the 2nd of June. The meeting will commence at 5:00 p.m. in our school Library. During the Annual General Meeting a new executive will be elected - the executive is comprised of a President, Treasurer and Secretary and without these three positions we are unable to continue to run our school tuckshop. By being a part of our P & C Association you have the opportunity to contribute opinions on:
- Positive school wide behaviours
- Student Dress Code
- School Routines
- P & C Budget
- School Budget
- School surveys
By being involved and being part of the discussions at the meeting, you can then become a voice in the school community, letting other parents know interesting and important information from these meeting.
Please take the time to consider being involved, ensuring the continuity of the tuckshop.
Yours in Education
Aderyn Chatterton
SUNSET STATE SCHOOL
QUEENSLAND FIRE AND RESCUE VISIT
Year 1W and Year 1/2 classes at Sunset State School were given safety lessons from the Firies. Part of the visit was to let the children have a turn of holding the fire hoses.
BIRTH CERTIFICATES FOR STUDENTS STARTING PREP YEAR
Is your child starting Prep in 2010?
If your child was born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2005, you will need proof of age (such as their birth certificate) to enrol them in school next year.
Don’t leave it to the last minute; apply for a birth certificate now.
The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages is encouraging parents to apply for birth certificates for their school-aged children now to avoid the back-to-school rush. Parents will need to provide identifying documents, such as a current driver’s licence or passport.
To apply for a standard or commemorative birth certificate, download an application form from the Department of Justice website on www.justice.qld.gov.au/465.htm or lodge your application at the Court House in Isa Street.
Information on preparing for Prep, including information on eligibility, can be found at: http://education.qld.gov.au/studentservices/inclusive/prep/index.html
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
50% of English words are spelled the way they sound phonically. If children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they are four years old, they’re usually among the best readers by the time they are eight.
