Sunset State School is situated in the north-west Queensland mining town of Mount Isa. The school has an enrolment of approximately 340 students with classes catering for Prep to Year 7 students. The Principal leads the administration team with the Head of Curriculum, Head of Special Education, Registrar and Administration Officer.

The specialist time includes Health and Physical Education, Library, Music, Learning Support, Reading Recovery and LOTE teachers and also the expertise of a Technical Support Officer. Visiting support staff include a Guidance Officer, Speech Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist and Instrumental Music Teachers.

The Special Education Unit addresses the needs of students with disabilities.

Sunset State School boasts a well resourced Library, Science Resource Centre and also Sport, Perceptual Motor and Reading Rooms.

Two-thirds of the student population recognise Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage. The school has an Indigenous Education Worker (IEW) to complement the Teacher Aides.
