Sunset State School Newsletter

18 November  2009

Dear Parents

I had an absolutely amazing week last week as I joined our Year 6/7 students on their school camp. Judging by the smiles, laughter and excitement that occurred during the week, the students had the time of their lives. Here is an overview of some of the amazing activities that the students were exposed to:

Parliament House                               Science Centre
Dreamworld                                        Seaworld
Outdoor educational activities - Canoeing, Indoor Rock Climbing, Giant Swing, Low ropes course
Beach activities with Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Savers
Shopping at Sunshine Plaza – Maroochydore
Sizzler for dinner                               3D movie experience
Southbank                                          Citycat ride
Ice-Skating

The students did an absolutely amazing job of representing our school – everyone who worked with us commented on the beautiful manners and enthusiastic participation of our students – it was an absolute honour to see our student’s in their element.

A sincere thank-you to Miss Farley who spent a good part of this year organising the camp and ensuring parents and students were informed, activities were fun and the cost was reasonable. I was also thrilled to have the opportunity to spend the week working closely with Miss Farley, Mr Constable and Mrs Craigie whose boundless enthusiasm and energy ensured that the camp was an experience that the students will never forget! Check out this week’s newsletter for some candid pictures that really sum up the fun!

 SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Please remember the swimming carnival is a whole school activity – students are expected to attend, participate and support their sporting house. There will be no alternative program running at school on Thursday as all staff will be at the pool ensuring the carnival is a huge success! No Tuckshop will be available – children MUST bring their own lunch. Entry to the pool is free for parents.

Congratulations to 2C who put on a great show for their parents, Preppies, SEU students and staff with their “Sunset Stars Dance Spectacular”. The concert was the culmination of their unit of work for this term and Mrs Whittington and I had the tough job of judging first and second place. Each group performed a dance that they had choreographed to a song of their choice – while every group did an amazing job.

2010 SCHOOL LEADERS
Prior to attending camp Miss Bauer and I ran a leadership day with our Year 6 students. As part of the activities we spoke to the students about applying for the Sports and School Captain positions for 2010. Nomination forms are due into the school office by the end of tomorrow with short listed candidates being announced on Friday. Miss A and Miss Bauer both have additional copies of paperwork so that students can still complete their forms and submit their nominations to be in the running!

FUNDRAISING NEWS
Every child that returns a book of Christmas Hamper Raffle Tickets will go into the draw to win a MP3 player – Good Luck!

If you are able to assist us with moving some furniture to prepare for the garage sale on Saturday and/or packing up after the event it would be greatly appreciated. There will be a team here setting up from 7:00am on Saturday morning – please feel free to pop over and give us a hand. All funds raised go straight back into the school and benefit your child!

END OF YEAR EVENTS
Our Year Seven Graduation Ceremony is being held next Tuesday night at the Overlander. Graduation is always a great evening with lots of celebration, laughter and fun! We look forward to seeing the families of our graduating students at the event.

Students in Years 6 and 7 have learnt the skill of Paper Mache and have made some very colourful and expressive pigs! Each student spent hours working on their pieces. Each pig has about 7 layers of paper, a coat of vibrant paint and an expressive face.
The students demonstrated a commitment to completing their artworks and should be commended. Their pigs are now displayed in the school’s library for all the students to admire.

 SUMMER SAFETY MESSAGE

With summer’s swimming season almost here, it’s a timely reminder for parents and carers to talk about pool safety with your child.
On 1 November, the Queensland Government launched its pool safety awareness campaign to remind parents and carers to be vigilant this summer.
With more than 300,000 residential pools in Queensland, drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children aged five and under.

Some of the causes include swimming competence, levels of supervision and the use of floatation devices.
To help lower the risks of these tragedies occurring, parents should follow the ABCs of pool safety:
·         Always supervise your child near a pool.
·         Begin swimming lessons as early as possible for your child.
·         Close the pool gate and keep your fence maintained.
For more information on the Government’s safety awareness campaign, visit www.dip.qld.gov.au/poolsafety

Sunset State School Newsletter

4 November  2009

Dear Parents

This newsletter features some great photos from our World Teachers’ Day parade that was held last Friday! Mrs Woods has made a fabulous display in our office foyer and I am sure you would agree Mrs Potter did a great job of capturing the essence of the celebration!

This Saturday afternoon the Mount Isa Instrumental Showcase Concert will be happening at the Mount Isa Civic Centre. The concert will be a fabulous night of entertainment with the Primary School Band, Drum group, Junior Strings, MISO, MICB, Spinifex State College Band and the Orchestra performing. Good luck to those students who are performing. The concert commences at 5:00 p.m. and entry is free, I hope to see many Sunset families supporting our students.

As part of our whole school preparations for 2010 Miss Bauer and I will be working with our year 6 students later on in the week talking to them about leadership positions for next year. All year 6 students will participate in leadership activities and workshops as well as receive information about nominating for a School Captain and/or House Captain position for next year. Interested students will bring an application package home on Friday and will need to complete the forms and return them to their class teacher by Thursday the 19th of November.

Our year 6/7 students depart for their Brisbane camp on Sunday morning. The bus leaves Sunset at 6:30- a.m. – SHARP – students and parents are encouraged to arrive at Sunset just after 6:00 a.m. Mr Constable, Miss Farley, Mrs Craigie and I will be attending the camp with the students. We have an amazing itinerary planned and will feature some highlights from the camp in the coming weeks. Please note that Mrs Whittington will be the Acting Principal in my absence.

Yours in Education

DPI&F DETECTOR DOG TEAM

Classes at Sunset were treated to a presentation from the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries’ Detector Dog Team. Handler, Mr Greg Horricks, and his team of 2 sniffer dogs, Floyd and Breeze, both chocolate Labradors, demonstrated their skills of sniffing out chemicals. Greg explained the importance of these dogs having the right temperament and willingness to play because the reward the dogs seek is a game of fetch and retrieve. Children also learnt that having a pet at home is a huge responsibility. Given the right care and affection their pets will become a loyal and trusted friend. Greg’s connection with his dogs was very evident. They trusted him completely.

Sunset State School Newsletter

28 October  2009

Dear Parents

World Teachers’ Day a time to say thanks!

This Friday 30 October is World Teachers’ Day. Celebrated in more than 100 countries, World Teachers’ Day acknowledges the efforts of teachers in an increasingly complex society.

Every day teachers are building skills that translate into future careers. They are shaping our future workforce and creating the next generation of leaders and innovators.

Sunset teachers are renowned as some of the most dedicated and innovative in our district. Daily interactions with our teachers remind me how fortunate we are to have teachers who are so professional and passionate about providing a quality learning experience for each and every student.

We will be recognising the great work of our teachers through a special parade starting at 8:40 a.m. on Friday morning.  Parents and community members are invited to join in the celebrations. We hope to see you there!

Our multi-talented admin officer, Mrs Woods, came across this poem and shared it with me – we thought it was an extremely touching poem that highlights the power of teachers and parents working in partnership.

Food for Thought
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child's mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher; the tools being used
Were books and music and art,
One a parent with a guiding hand
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day the teacher toiled
With touch that was deft and sure,
While the parent laboured just as hard
And polished and smoothed it o'er.
When at last their task was done
They were proud of what they had wrought,
For the things they had moulded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And both agreed they would have failed
If they had worked alone;
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.
David Bowen

With only six weeks left of the school year our P&C are starting to get organised for their annual Christmas Hamper Raffle. We are holding a free dress day this Friday and are asking the students to wear “red” to get into the spirit!  Rather than make a gold coin donation we ask parents to purchase an item that can be placed in our Christmas Hampers some ideas include:

  • Non-perishable food items
  • Biscuits, lollies, jam
  • Christmas Decorations, Bon Bons
  • Toys
  • Christmas wrapping

Our lovely tuckshop ladies, Lisa and Kathy always do an amazing job of organising the raffle and making the hampers. If you are able to assist with making booklets or putting the hampers together please pop in and see them at the tuckshop.

Reminder - the year seven students head over to Spinifex State College, Junior Campus for their transition days next Tuesday and Wednesday. Please contact your child’s teacher if you require further details.

I am growing increasingly concerned by the large number of students who are arriving at school before 8:00 a.m.  When I arrived at 7:15 this morning there was already a child at school.  We discourage this for two key reasons firstly there is not adequate supervision for the children at this time and secondly the staff that choose to come into school that early are doing so to ensure that they are organised and prepared to delivery a quality educational program for your children.  Please reiterate this with your child and ensure that they are arriving at school after 8:00 a.m. the implementation of this rule will help us to ensure your child's safety.

Congratulations to Mr Pete who was successful in gaining the permanent groundsman position. Mr Pete has done an amazing job since arriving at our school and we look forward to enjoying more and more of his great work in our school grounds

NORA GOODRIDGE MANAGEMENT PERFORMANCE
On Tuesday 20 October, 2009 Sunset State School will be presenting a performance by renowned Aboriginal performer, Dion Drummond.

Dion was born in Mossman and has spent most of his life in the area. He is a very talented young man who was part of the well-known Naroo Dancers, and has performed extensively in Australia and toured overseas.

The first part of his programme is full of wonderful and playful Islander music including various Island dances and singing.
The second part of his performance is devoted to Aboriginal dance, indigenous to far north Queensland, didgeridoo, clapping sticks, stories and explanations of various artefacts.

His performance strikes a perfect balance between entertainment, humour and information, bringing a deeper understanding of the two different cultures.
There is no cost to students to attend this performance.
