Sunset State School Newsletter
18 November 2009
Dear Parents
I had an absolutely amazing week last week as I joined our Year 6/7 students on their school camp. Judging by the smiles, laughter and excitement that occurred during the week, the students had the time of their lives. Here is an overview of some of the amazing activities that the students were exposed to:
Parliament House Science Centre
Dreamworld Seaworld
Outdoor educational activities - Canoeing, Indoor Rock Climbing, Giant Swing, Low ropes course
Beach activities with Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Savers
Shopping at Sunshine Plaza – Maroochydore
Sizzler for dinner 3D movie experience
Southbank Citycat ride
Ice-Skating
The students did an absolutely amazing job of representing our school – everyone who worked with us commented on the beautiful manners and enthusiastic participation of our students – it was an absolute honour to see our student’s in their element.
A sincere thank-you to Miss Farley who spent a good part of this year organising the camp and ensuring parents and students were informed, activities were fun and the cost was reasonable. I was also thrilled to have the opportunity to spend the week working closely with Miss Farley, Mr Constable and Mrs Craigie whose boundless enthusiasm and energy ensured that the camp was an experience that the students will never forget! Check out this week’s newsletter for some candid pictures that really sum up the fun!
SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Please remember the swimming carnival is a whole school activity – students are expected to attend, participate and support their sporting house. There will be no alternative program running at school on Thursday as all staff will be at the pool ensuring the carnival is a huge success! No Tuckshop will be available – children MUST bring their own lunch. Entry to the pool is free for parents.
Congratulations to 2C who put on a great show for their parents, Preppies, SEU students and staff with their “Sunset Stars Dance Spectacular”. The concert was the culmination of their unit of work for this term and Mrs Whittington and I had the tough job of judging first and second place. Each group performed a dance that they had choreographed to a song of their choice – while every group did an amazing job.
2010 SCHOOL LEADERS
Prior to attending camp Miss Bauer and I ran a leadership day with our Year 6 students. As part of the activities we spoke to the students about applying for the Sports and School Captain positions for 2010. Nomination forms are due into the school office by the end of tomorrow with short listed candidates being announced on Friday. Miss A and Miss Bauer both have additional copies of paperwork so that students can still complete their forms and submit their nominations to be in the running!

LIBRARY NEWS
Could all students with library loans please ensure your books are returned to the Library this week for the end of year stock take.
Students in Years 6 and 7 have learnt the skill of Paper Mache and have made some very colourful and expressive pigs! Each student spent hours working on their pieces. Each pig has about 7 layers of paper, a coat of vibrant paint and an expressive face.
The students demonstrated a commitment to completing their artworks and should be commended. Their pigs are now displayed in the school’s library for all the students to admire.
SUMMER SAFETY MESSAGE
With summer’s swimming season almost here, it’s a timely reminder for parents and carers to talk about pool safety with your child.
On 1 November, the Queensland Government launched its pool safety awareness campaign to remind parents and carers to be vigilant this summer.
With more than 300,000 residential pools in Queensland, drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in children aged five and under.
Some of the causes include swimming competence, levels of supervision and the use of floatation devices.
To help lower the risks of these tragedies occurring, parents should follow the ABCs of pool safety:
· Always supervise your child near a pool.
· Begin swimming lessons as early as possible for your child.
· Close the pool gate and keep your fence maintained.
